SHIHOKO FUKUMOTO Born 1945

Shihoko Fukumoto originally studied painting, eventually deciding that the painting materials were not suited to her ideas and ways of working. Her major concerns are with space and for her indigo is the colour of space. Many of the techniques and tools used by Shihoko Fukumoto are her own invention allowing her to respond intuitively to the possibilities inherent in the dyeing process. The work ‘Milky Way’ is Fukumoto’s own variation on the traditional method of shibori, a form of tie-dyeing using folding, pleating and sewing. ‘Opening Moon, Closing Moon’ depicts the phase of the moon at the opening of the exhibition in April 2001 and at the closing at the first venue in June 2001.
