SHIGEO KUBOTO Born 1947

Shigeo Kubota, who trained as a weaver, uses the humblest materials, sisal for the weft and ramie as the warp, and the most basic technique, plain weave. The long thin woven strips are then sewn together to create complex three-dimensional structures. The sounds and rhythms of nature have been starting points, as in ‘Echo of the Wind No. X’, with space, light and shadow important elements in the work. ‘Woven Corridor - From Italy’ marks a new phase in his work, inspired by the architecture of the churches and cathedrals he visited in Italy. The gold warp links the two cultures, referring to the interior of the churches and to the light within and the light which is drawn from the shadows.
