HARUMI ISOBE
Born 1941
Harumi Isobe
trained in Sweden to be a tapestry weaver and her approach is one in which
three dimensional qualities are very important. These are achieved in
several ways: through texture and colour, by folding and pleating, by
layering one piece in front of another or by transparency. The use of
the gathering and ‘shrinking’ of ‘Earth Cardiogram’ illustrates the sensation
that the earth is becoming smaller and more vulnerable. The ‘Missa Flora’
works echo her view of the transient nature of existence, the text woven
within the pieces naming extinct and endangered flora. As we look through
the tapestry our view of its surrounding space is tempered by the textures
and text within the work.
